CONFLUENCIA BILBAO
MANIFESTO
This project takes place on Zorrotzaurre island in Bilbao focusing on the concept of “city acupuncture” and aims to revitalize the abandoned post-industrial city- scape by activating key locations. The chosen site for this project is the Artiach Biscuit Factory, which holds historical and cultural significance.
The project acknowledges the importance of mental well-being of a community who holds the legacy of heavy industrialization, and emphasizes the creation of well-crafted public spaces at various scales to foster social connections and generate new urban value.
Inspired by psychiatrist Ian Gilchrist’s findings on the nature of the right and left brain hemispheres, the project aims to transform the building from a ma- chine-like, left hemisphere-oriented space into a more creative, empathetic, and interconnected environment that encourages holistic collaboration among the exisiting creative sectors.
The spanish word ‘CONFLUENCIA’ used for this project’s name refers to a gathering or convergence of diverse elements, ideas, or activities. This project en- visions this word to embody a place where different creative pursuits coming together and celebrating.
The new Artiach factory’s design proposes a dynamic landscape of co-working and public spaces both inside and outside the building. These spaces can adapt over time to accommodate various uses, fostering an ever-changing interactive environment that expands the possibilities and freedom of its users.
